Enhancing English communication skills for academic success and employability

🗨️“We place a major emphasis on the quality of our education. The British Council has always stood out with highly professional teams and delivery of service” Magda Maghradze, Kutaisi International University Chancellor.

Established in 2020, Kutaisi International University (KIU) attracts some of the best students in the region, and it is actively working towards becoming an international hub for education, science, and technology. By developing students' knowledge and skills, KIU aims to drive economic growth and entrepreneurship not only in Georgia but also in the wider region.

Central to KIU’s strategy is enhancing students’ English communication skills to prepare them for an increasingly diverse and interconnected world. All degree courses (Computer Science, Maths and Management) are taught in English, attracting students and faculty from diverse backgrounds which enriches the learning experience.

In partnership with the British Council, KIU offers one-year and two-year English communication programmes for undergraduates and English preparatory courses for secondary students. These programmes facilitate academic achievement and enhance students’ opportunities for research collaborations and employment. KIU is the first university in Georgia to establish such a partnership, highlighting its commitment to innovative approaches aimed at achieving academic excellence.

In the last four years, the British Council has improved the communication skills of approximately 1,500 students, fostering greater understanding and academic success.

The Challenge

Many first-year students enroll straight from secondary school, having had few opportunities to develop academic and professional communication skills in English. They also lack the specialised language of their fields of study, such as business English or English for IT.

"We needed a partner who could provide a high level of English teaching, professionalism, and communication" explains Magda Maghradze, KIU Chancellor.

KIU sought an experienced partner, renowned for their expertise in designing and implementing high-quality English language programmes to meet rigorous academic standards. Collaboration and communication would be crucial to the partnership, along with rigorous planning and scheduling processes to ensure the effective management of the programme. Flexibility was important to adapt annually to the diverse learning needs and preferences of its students.
